Indigo Fabric Dyeing

DIY Class Arts & Culture Classes Workshop

What’s Happening?

Explore the ancient art of dyeing with indigo in this hands-on workshop at Lauritzen Gardens. Indigo, the oldest recorded dye in history, has been used for thousands of years—from Ancient Egypt to modern-day textile arts. In this class, we’ll dive into the fascinating history of blue dyes and the methods behind creating an indigo vat through a fermentation process, much like sourdough or kombucha.

You’ll also learn the Japanese art of shibori, a unique mark-making technique that transforms fabric into one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork. All materials will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring one or two small natural fabric pieces from home to dye with the excess indigo vat.

This class is designed for ages 16 and up and for all levels of experience. Join us for an immersive, creative experience and walk away with a deeper appreciation for indigo’s rich history and stunning blue hues.

Each session is $60, $50 for garden members. Pre-registration is required at least one week in advance of each class.
