What’s Happening?

Join us for our free monthly event for families, kids, and the young at heart. On the second Sunday of every month, the museum is filled with hands-on art activities, storytelling, artist demonstrations, gallery hunts, self-guided tours and more — all inspired by Mia’s incredible collection. January 12: Playful Prints
How many prints and patterns can you find at Mia? Explore colorful designs inspired by quilts with the expertise of Laura Brown. Create your own repeating pattern and print on a bandana with the Textile Center. Dive into the world of theme and variation with music from Jonathan Roek, Eunice Kim, and Twin Cities String Academy in the Baroque Galleries. Discover the mesmerizing, dramatic flair of flamenco with Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre. Take off on a fun gallery hunt that’ll send you searching for playful prints and patterns on display.

February 9: Inspiration Everywhere
Celebrate Black History Month at Mia and find inspiration everywhere. Let your imagination soar with Danielle Daniel, one of Minnesota’s best storytellers. Feel the beat with a stellar dance performance from the Somali Museum Dance Troupe before trying out moves yourself! Make your own artist book with Essence Enwere and bold, colorful paintings with Hibaaq Ibrahim. Enjoy a special gallery hunt that is sure to get your feet moving and your hands clapping.

March 9: Together
Everything’s better when you do it together. Create art projects with Lissa Karpeh and Mia Teaching Artist Akiko Ostlund. Enjoy a reading of “The Moons” with Minnesota author and musician Chan Poling and illustrator Lucy Michell. Join Kith + and Kin Chorus for an interactive musical performance, no singing experience required. A special gallery hunt will help youto explore Mia’s collections and see what you can discover about other cultures around the world.

April 13: Sensational Sculptures
Your imagination is endless at Family Day. Anything you can imagine, you can make in Clay City with Now. Make. Art. Search the galleries for artwork created with unusual materials. How wild and wacky can you get? Create sculptural, wearable art with Ivonne Yáñez. Join Children’s Theater Company and explore the world of frozen statues, using actor tools of body, voice, and imagination. Enjoy performances from Twin Cities Ballet that’ll feature dancers creating fantastic shapes.

May 11: Big and Small
Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Month) and Mother’s Day at Mia Family Day! Create whimsical shadow puppets and explore Mia’s Japanese art collection with Teaching Artist Akiko Ostlund. Combine and collage a Mother’s Day bouquet using illustrated elements with Lora Hlavsa. Enjoy story time with local writer Monica Rojas, author of Nana Y Abuela, and color your world with illustrator Emiko Rainbow. Experience beautiful movement and music with Chinese American Association of Minnesota Chinese Dance Theater! Satisfy your tastebuds with Yum Yum Food Truck (11 a.m.–1 p.m.).

June 8: Rock the Cradle
Have a blast at Rock the Cradle! Let music be your inspiration for artmaking with Teaching Artist Laura Wennstrom. Enjoy performances and get your body moving to the beat with Young Dance. Search the galleries for colorful works of art—the more colors, the better! Full Rock the Cradle lineup coming soon.

July 13: Bloom
Let your creativity bloom at Family Day! Teaching Artist Akiko Ostlund will guide you through creating your own floral prints on paper, inspired by Mia’s exhibition “Hokusai | Monet.” Join the Japan America Society of Minnesota for an origami art activity with a blossoming Sakura tree, and learn a few dance moves in Target Park. Enjoy performances by TaikoArts Midwest and learn about the Japanese tradition of Taiko drumming! Roam Mia’s galleries and search for artworks inspired by nature.

August 10: Elemental
Take a break from the summer heat at Family Day! Enjoy story time with local writer Molly Beth Griffin, author of Rhoda’s Rock Hunt, and then make a wearable piece of nature-inspired artwork. Explore exciting art materials with poet BakiBakiBaki. Sing along to your favorite songs with musical group Basic ‘n Boring during an outdoor concert hosted in Target Park. Search the galleries for works made with natural materials, including clay, wood, glass, and metal. Make artwork inspired by Mia’s collection with a Mia teaching artist.
