Bobby Henrie and the Goners ~ Blues Fusion Dance Scene @ French Quarter, Thu 6/1

Rock Blues Swing

What’s Happening?

Thursday June 1 ~ The Blues Fusion Dance Scene hosts "Bobby Henrie and The Goners” in the “French Quarter Club”, a hidden gem on the 2nd floor of the "French Quarter Restaurant" in a majestic mansion in downtown Rochester, circa 1849.

Bobby Henrie and the Goners' style of JUMP Blues and rockabilly riot are made for dancing, taking you back to the swinging golden age of early rock 'n' roll. The lean trio plays authentic roots rock in the tradition of Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley, with dashes of country, blues and hot jazz mixed into their outstanding originals.

The Goners vast repertoire includes a mix of rarefied songs and instrumentals performed with sincere excitement, freshness and finesse. Their vocals are laced with stacked harmonies in the tradition of the Moonglows, Flamingos, Jordanares and Clovers. The Goners are a legendary institution now celebrating over 30 years together and still going strong. An evening spent with Bobby Henrie and the Goners will be long remembered.

BACKGROUND ON BOBBY HENRIE & THE GONERS

Bobby Henrie's early days as an astounding child prodigy shaped his talent and love of eclecticism which includes most traditional music from old-time country to rockabilly and swing. As a guitarist with an unorthodox (flipped, lefty) technique, he can rip through a heady brew of raw roots rock, blistering flatpicking, smoking blues or smooth jazz. His vocal style is heartfelt, well honed and true to the style whether it's tough rocking or sultry swing. Bobby holds a degree in Jazz Guitar from SUNY Geneseo and is adept at writing material with a classic yet contemporary flair.

Bobby is also a founding member of the Gypsy Jazz band - The Djangoners - and continues to perform with his 4 brothers in the Henrie Brothers String Band that formed in 1974. Bobby recently launched a solo project to celebrate one of his guitar idols - Doc Watson - with an album dedicated to him titled "Doc Rememberances".

Brian Williams plays the upright bass in a style heavily influenced by the early bass men of jazz and rock'n'roll, blending the rhythms of blues, bluegrass, Dixieland and swing. Brian launched his musical career in 1972 with the SwampRoot String Band playing festivals and fiddler's conventions all along the Appalachians. Later, he joined the John Mooney Blues Band and toured for 10 years working clubs, festivals and concerts from Maine to Chicago to New Orleans.

Brian shared the bill with national acts like Muddy Waters, Albert King, John Lee Hooker, Paul Butterfield and Asleep at the Wheel. He gained recognition as a player with deep respect for traditional styles as well as a unique slap-style technique. In 1985, he joined Bobby Henrie and the Goners and developed a rockabilly and swing repertoire. in 2010, along with Bobby Henrie, formed the Djangoners, a Gypsy Jazz band playing in the tradition of the great Django Reinhardt and his Hot Club of France.

James Symonds began playing drums at the age of 5. He was exposed to music in his home from his parent's extensive collection of swing, blues and rock'n'roll recordings. His mother collected all of Elvis Presley's records and played them constantly. Jim began playing in bands when he was in junior high school and soon had the reputation as the 'must-have' drummer in his large neighborhood. As a young adult, he found himself regularly playing in country bands in honky-tonks and rural roadhouses throughout western NY.

In the early 70s, Jim joined the "Blues Union" backing the great Mississipi bluesman, Joe Beard. In the next two decades, he was a founding member of the Meteors, Don't Call Me Junior and Bobby Henrie and the Goners. He also did a stint with the legendary local rockers, the Hi-Risers.
