Harry Detry: ETHEREAL MASKS

What’s Happening?

The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts is proud to present ETHEREAL MASKS by Harry Detry on view in the South Cases through March 26th.

E·THE·RE·AL /IˈTHIRĒƏL/
Extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world.

ETHEREAL MASKS

African masks have traditionally been carved in wood or sculpted in stone and imbued with cultural and spiritual significance. In these works, from many African countries and cultures, Harry Detry has given the masks a more ethereal quality by making them out of construction paper. The attention to detail and authenticity with which they are made ensure that the masks retain their cultural and spiritual weight.

Harry Detry is a visual and performing artist that has been sharing his love of art for more than 50 years. Self-taught, his research has taken him around the world gathering inspiration that he infuses into different styles of artwork. Harry’s many years of dancing with the world renowned Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago continues to be the subject matter of multiple art mediums, from grand sculptures, wearable jewelry, and colorful paintings, to costume masks.

AS A FORMER DANCER AND COSTUMER OF MUNTU DANCE THEATRE OF CHICAGO, HARRY IS DONATING A PORTION OF THE SALES FROM THIS EXHIBIT TO MUNTU FOR THE CREATION OF COSTUMES FOR MALE DANCERS.
