What’s Happening?

August 5-September 17, visit Public Works Art Center to explore our newest East Gallery Exhibition, "Pencils and Pixels," featuring works by Tom Galmarini, Josh Drews, and Timothy Banks. Artworks will feature both traditional mediums and digital elements.

Reception for this show is August 18, 5:30-8:30pm. At 7pm, Josh Drews will perform a live demonstration of AI-generated artwork along with a brief talk and discussion about the concept.

About the artists:

Timothy Banks is a Charleston artist who has created work for Nike, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Marvel, Nickelodeon, Paste, and TOWN magazines, respectively. In Charleston, he's made the official art for Piccolo Spoleto, YALLFest, Charleston Farmers Markets, and this year's official cover for the Charleston CVB's Visitor Guide. In addition, he's created the official stage backdrop for ETV's Live at Charleston Music Hall and illustrated magazine covers and pages for College of Charleston, Charleston City Paper, and MUSC. He has also exhibited his work in LA, London, Hong Kong, Atlanta, Asheville, and of course, in the Holy City. Trained as a traditional artist, Timothy strives to do contemporary digital work which feels both graphic and authentic. His work on display represents years of style refinement and love for pushing his work's boundaries. You can find out more about his process on timothybanks.com or follow @timbanks on Instagram.

Josh Drews! Is a visual & media artist and educator. He has been teaching visual and media art at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC since 2001. He has helped develop arts curriculum for South Carolina, including co-authoring the 2010 and 2017 SC Media Arts standards and he has written SC curriculum guides for Media Arts and Printmaking. He currently serves as the National Art Education Association Southeast Region Vice President-Elect, and is the former president of the South Carolina Art Education Association and Secondary Director for the NAEA. He is an avid print maker and working artist. Most recently he has been recognised as the 2020 NAEA National Secondary Art Educator of the year, the 2021 Winthrop University Fine Arts Alumni of the Year, and he received the 2022 Columbia Museum of Art MacArthur Goodwin Award for his work in visual arts education through the utilization of community arts resources. (all of which is pretty neat)

He is proud to have a deep passion for teaching and creating art, his students, comic books, video games, his super talented wife, two amazing daughters (Zimmie & Lyra), and battle cat Tobias

Cleveland native, Tom Galmarini, as one might expect, is fiercely loyal to Cleveland Sports. This Buckeye-based fervor is matched only by his proclivity for Pearl Jam.

Tom currently has his own design firm, DIG Creative, and spent 15 years in Charleston. He is Professor of Graphic Design and Illustration at McNeese State University. He received his MFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford.

Tom, his wife, Jill, and their children Katie and Riley reside in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
