Bahar Ensemble: 1001 Arabian Nights

Dinner Live Music Storytelling

What’s Happening?

Music • Poetry • Storytelling • Bellydance

Prepare to be transported into a world of moonlit gardens, whispered love poems, ancient tales, intoxicating rhythms, and the timeless allure of the Arabian Nights.

Join Bahar Ensemble, Twyla Birdsong, Gemhara Almaz, and an exquisite lineup of guest bellydance artists for a glamorous evening celebrating love, longing, beauty, music, and desire.

At the heart of the evening is Bahar Ensemble, a five-member group whose growing repertoire spans centuries and draws from Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish, Persian, North African, Andalusian, and related musical traditions. Founded in 2017 at Western Michigan University, the ensemble began when founder and violinist Ahmed Tofiq arrived in the United States from the Kurdistan region of Iraq to pursue his master's degree in violin performance. Today, the ensemble features Ahmed Tofiq on violin, Dr. Beau Bothwell on oud, Liz Youker on cello, Dede Alder on percussion, and Carolyn Koebel.

Let the evening unfold like a dream as English and Arabic love poetry fills the air, accompanied by the lush and captivating sounds of Bahar Ensemble. Lose yourself in the legendary tale of Princess Budour and Prince Al Quamar from One Thousand and One Nights—a story of passion, adventure, devotion, and the extraordinary journeys we take in search of love.

Then let the music pull you deeper into the magic.

Gemhara Almaz and her guest bellydance artists will weave through the evening with mesmerizing performances, bringing ancient stories and timeless emotions to life through movement. With every rhythm, gesture, and glance, the dancers will invite you into a world where music and desire speak their own language.

Come dressed to enchant—or simply come ready to be enchanted.

Bring your beloved and make it a night of romance. Come with friends and indulge in an evening of beauty and celebration. Or come alone and leave room for a little mystery… perhaps the most intriguing stranger in the room is waiting to cross your path.
