Brevard Philharmonic Presents “Russian Spectacular” Featuring Violinist Claire Wells

BREVARD, NC - The Brevard Philharmonic continues its 50th Anniversary Season with **“Russian Spectacular”** on Sunday, November 8, at 3:00 p.m. at the Porter Center at Brevard College. The program features two beloved masterpieces of nineteenth-century Russian music: Tchaikovsky’s **Violin Concerto in D Major** and Mussorgsky’s **Pictures at an Exhibition**, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel.

Guest artist **Claire Wells** will join the orchestra as soloist for Tchaikovsky’s celebrated Violin Concerto, one of the cornerstones of the violin repertoire. Filled with soaring melodies, expressive lyricism, and dazzling virtuosity, the concerto showcases both the technical brilliance of the soloist and Tchaikovsky’s gift for unforgettable melody.

The concerto was completed in 1878 during a particularly turbulent period in Tchaikovsky’s life. While recovering in Switzerland, the composer worked with violinist Yosif Kotek, whose advice on violin technique helped shape the work. Initially considered too difficult to perform, the concerto was eventually premiered in Vienna in 1881. Though its early reception was mixed, it gradually became recognized as one of Tchaikovsky’s greatest works.

The second half of the program features Mussorgsky’s **Pictures at an Exhibition**, in Ravel’s magnificent orchestration. Inspired by an exhibition of works by Mussorgsky’s friend, the architect and painter Victor Hartmann, the suite transforms visual art and memories of friendship into music. Mussorgsky composed the original piano suite in just 20 days in 1874. Ravel’s 1922 orchestration has since become one of the great orchestral showpieces.

From the mysterious **“Gnomus”** and the haunting **“Catacombs”** to the dramatic **“Baba-Yaga”** and triumphant **“The Great Gate of Kyiv,”** *Pictures at an Exhibition* takes audiences on a vivid musical journey through a gallery of imagined scenes. Ravel’s colorful orchestration brings an extraordinary range of instrumental voices to each picture.

“Russian Spectacular” offers audiences a chance to experience two very different sides of nineteenth-century Russian music: Tchaikovsky’s internationally celebrated Romantic style and Mussorgsky’s connection to the nationalist Russian musical tradition.
