Across Cultures, One Nervous System — 5Rhythms® Movement Practice

What’s Happening?

Across cultures, rhythms change.

But the human nervous system is the same.

In a city like San Francisco, many cultures, identities, professions, and ways of living move alongside one another every day. That diversity brings richness, creativity, and different ways of being in the world. It can also create speed, friction, and subtle stress in the body.

Many high-functioning adults live in a pattern of override. The body continues to function, perform, and carry responsibility, while its signals gradually lose influence. Fatigue is noticed but postponed. Tension is recognized but not acted on. Over time, the nervous system can lose range — the ability to move fluidly between effort and recovery, activation and rest, focus and sensing.

It is not movement alone, but a wider range of movement, that helps restore that range.

This 4-Thursday 5Rhythms® movement practice explores how rhythm helps the body rediscover adaptability through direct experience. Each evening moves through the full 5Rhythms wave — Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness — while different musical landscapes invite the body to experience that arc in new ways.

The structure of the wave remains the same.

What changes is the sonic and rhythmic texture carrying it.

This is not about performing cultural dance forms. It is about experiencing how rhythm organizes human movement across difference, and how the body responds — again and again — through the same living nervous system.

There is gentle guidance throughout, with room for each person to move in their own way.

No choreography.

No performance pressure.

No dance experience needed.

Just a spacious room, a moving floor, and the chance to listen again from the inside.

Come as you are.

Move at your own scale.

Restore the range that allows the body to respond, adapt, and feel alive again.
