Event Description

Fefu and Her Friends
By Maria Irene Fornes
Directed by Erin Nicole Harrington

Fridays and Saturdays 7:30 PM, Sundays 2:00 PM
May 1-10, 2026
Tickets: $30 Adults, $15 Students 21 and Under

Maria Irene Fornes-one of the most influential yet underrecognized playwrights of the 20th century-created more than 40 works celebrated for their spare poetry, emotional force, and theatrical daring. The 1978 premiere of Fefu and Her Friends cemented her reputation as a visionary artist whose impact can be felt in generations of playwrights including Tony Kushner, Paula Vogel, Caryl Churchill, Migdalia Cruz, and many more.

Both funny and unsettling, Fefu and Her Friends unfolds as a reunion among eight women at Fefu's country home in 1935. What begins as a lively gathering gradually reveals the private struggles, resilience, contradictions, and inner lives of women living within rigid social expectations. Fornes' structure is groundbreaking: after the opening scene, the audience moves through multiple locations to experience four intimate scenes up close-each one offering a different perspective on the characters, their relationships, and the fragile, complex worlds they carry.

A landmark of feminist theatre and a powerful exploration of friendship, pain, humor, and survival, Fefu and Her Friends remains as urgent and mesmerizing today as when it premiered.

Run Time: Approximately 2 hours with intermission.
Important: In Part 2, as intended by the author, the audience will leave their seats and rotate through four locations around the Hubbard Hall campus to experience the scenes.

Prices:
Adult: USD 30.00,
Students 21 and Under: USD 15.00

Artist / Speaker: Maria Irene Fornes
