Reflections On Coexistence By Hirona Matsuda

Exhibit Sculpture Art Exhibition

What’s Happening?

Hirona Matsuda | East Gallery: “Reflections On Coexistence”
Opening Reception: May 15th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Artist Bio

Hirona Matsuda is a Japanese-Irish American artist based in Charleston, SC.  Her found object assemblage and kinetic sculpture is informed by objects she finds and her relationship to her personal collections.  Taking common objects and recontextualizing them as sculpture, she engages people as they contemplate what they are looking at and how it makes them feel.

Recent exhibitions include Porous at ICOSA Art in Austin, Texas, After the Dust Settles at Echo Contemporary in Atlanta, and Beyond the Canvas at the Cannon Street Arts Center in Charleston.  She was also recently featured at the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale in Korea where her piece was awarded best international work.  Her assemblage sculpture can be found at Corrigan Gallery on Queen St in downtown Charleston.

Artist Statement

Reflections on Coexistence is about examining our relationships with others, primarily how we communicate with each other and how we view ourselves during these interactions.  Living for a number of years with a family member who gradually lost their hearing was fascinating and frustrating and I learned things about how people communicate that I had not been aware of.

Analyzing why certain things made me feel comfortable or uncomfortable, angry or acknowledged, and most importantly, heard and understood.  My biggest revelation was how I responded to being reflected in another person.  How brutal it is to see your worst traits acted out by someone and realizing it bothers you more because it reminds you that you are capable of the same thing.

More broadly speaking I hope that this work invites you to engage with the concept of communication and self reflection as it applies to all people and scenarios.  If we all approached each other this way perhaps we could be less reactive and be more empathetic.
