What’s Happening?

Celebrate World Elephant Day at the Little Rock Zoo!

Elephants are not only the largest land mammals but also some of the most intelligent and socially complex animals on Earth. At the Little Rock Zoo, we have a long-standing history of caring for these majestic creatures, beginning in 1937 with the arrival of our first elephant, Ruth. Over the decades, we have remained committed to their well-being and conservation.

Join us on August 9th as we celebrate World Elephant Day and honor the Zoo’s century-long dedication to these incredible animals.

Elephants play a vital role in their ecosystems by dispersing seeds, creating water holes, and shaping their habitats. By protecting Asian elephants from threats like habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict, we are helping to ensure their ecosystems can thrive for generations to come. Little Rock Zoo specializes in caring for elderly female elephants. Visit the Zoo to meet our elephants and learn more about our conservation efforts and how you can help!

Though, Sophie, one of our cherished elephants pasted away in 2024, her legacy continues to inspire us. To honor her memory, we accept donations to the Arkansas Zoological Foundation to support Asian elephant conservation.
