Earth & Art: Sculpting Clay for Home & Garden

Arts & Culture Classes Crafts DIY Class

What’s Happening?

Using pottery skills like coiling and slab rolling, get creative with clay sculpture, led by instructor Emily Hohertz! Bring your ideas and inspiration for home/garden decor, or come with a blank slate! No prior skills needed.

To start class off we will make a few practice pieces using sculpting skills to aid you in your free-build. We'll make a coaster using slab rolling techniques, a cup to use the pinch pot method, and a coiled pot to learn how to score, slip and make even ropes of clay.

When we've finished our demos, it's time to unleash your creativity! You can scrap everything and start new or you can use your practice pieces to build upon. We can easily build a garden gnome or creature out of a pinch pot, or a trinket tray from a slab.

Once pieces are sculpted, you may choose to decorate them with underglazes, texture tools, or clay attachments before class is over.

Built into this class is the opportunity to glaze your piece during our Walk-in Pottery Painting hours Saturday from 1-4pm after your pieces have fully dried and have been bisque fired (usually around 2 weeks after initial class time).

We look forward to geting into clay with you!

Note: This workshop is a part of a series called: The Dabbler's Workshop, a fun and exploratory arts and craft class designed for those who love to experiment and try new things! Join us Saturday afternoons for a creative journey where each week brings a new medium and project to discover. Over the course of 12 weeks, we will be offering hands-on experience with a variety of materials, including paint, clay, glass, and textiles.

Each unique class is taught by a one of our talented instructors from Inspired Minds Art Center, each bringing their own expertise and creative flair. Whether you're looking to sign up for the entire semester, a specific month, or just the projects that catch your eye, The Dabbler's Workshop offers flexibility to fit your schedule. This is the perfect opportunity to explore your creative side, meet like-minded individuals, and bring your artistic visions to life. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and curiosity!
