SLICE: A Celebration of Culture and Community

Other Arts and Culture Summer Spring

What’s Happening?

SLICE explores how Rico Golden and his homeboys from Memphis, Tennessee, submerge themselves in an original swimming art form of athleticism, creativity, and joy called slicing while refusing to drown in a pool of society's expectations.

SLICE follows Rico, Memphis native and all-star “Slicer”, who tells the world about his city’s underground culture of swimming. “Slicin’” is a diving technique that highlights intricate moves while diving into a swimming pool. Rico and his homeboy "Sip" have found joy and refuge at public and apartment swimming pools in Memphis despite systematic issues of access and the distractions of life’s stresses. Together, they explore how slicin’ engages the water as a safe place for them as they grew up. With a vibrant style all its own, SLICE centers Black men experiencing joy in the water.

Zaire Love [azairelovejunt] is an award-winning filmmaker, music maker, writer, and educator whose mission is to honor, amplify, and immortalize the stories and voices of the Black South. Focusing most of her work in Memphis, TN, and Mississippi, Zaire's creative endeavors extend beyond the Black South. Bringing honor to its people, traditions, and cultures in the past, present, and future is her life’s work.

Forget the movie theater, watch your movies in a marble clad museum! Sign up today for an afternoon of community and culture!
