Somatic Release Yoga

Yoga

What’s Happening?

Somatic Release Yoga is a revolutionary technique in trauma healing & stress reduction using gentle movement, stretching, breathwork, meditation & somatic release shaking methods. These trauma-sensitive, inclusive classes provide you with alternative tools to release stress, heal trauma, reconnect to your life & improve nervous system resilience. They are a slow invitation to return to your body & learn to create safety within. Somatic Release Yoga is helpful for everyone & highly recommended for military, frontlines, first responders, victims of violence or abuse, those in addiction recovery, mental health professionals & anyone suffering from trauma or PTSD (in conjunction with a mental health professional.) Those who have taken Caitlin’s classes report reconnection to life, improved nervous system resilience & sleep, decreased anxiety, decreased physical pain, release of chronic tension, increase of energy & stamina, discharge of buried emotional & physical trauma, and alleviated PTSD symptoms.

The science behind Somatic Release Yoga:
All mammals (including humans) have the innate wisdom to shake & complete the body’s stress response cycle, humans just need to remember. You’ll find countless videos of animals escaping a predator and intrinsically shake from head to tail. They walk away unscathed. Scientists have found that mammals in the wild do not have PTSD because they shake out the adrenaline & complete the body’s natural stress response cycle. As humans have evolved, to not appear weak or vulnerable, we’ve unconsciously shut down this intrinsic response. This comes at a cost— our issues live in our tissues & stress is wrecking havoc on our physical, emotional and mental health. When we go into fight/flight, our psoas (the muscles that run from our lumbar region to our femur) contracts to prepare the body to react to the perceived threat (ie: run, fight, freeze.) In that contraction, the energy from that experience gets trapped in our body. The stress or trauma is not actually the problem- the problem lies in how we deal with it and what happens inside of us in response to the experience. Somatic Release Yoga facilitates fatiguing, lengthening and relaxing the psoas muscle to create the neurogenic tremor or shaking response. Often vibration begins in the legs and may spread throughout the whole body. This portion of class is guided like a meditation to safely drop in and allow your body to naturally do what it’s designed to.  If we reteach our body this primal shaking response, we can unlock trapped stress & trauma from our tissues and safely heal without reliving the experience. This creates resilience and prevents immobilization, burnout, & PTSD. Class brings your nervous system back into balance so you are ready for the next stressor. You will learn how to turn on your own innate medicine so you can show up in the world with a fuller cup & more peaceful heart.

Bio:
Caitlin Weisel (@rockroseyoga) is an Emergency & Trauma Registered Nurse. She is also a Trauma-Informed 200 hour trained Registered Yoga Teacher. She has done specialized trauma training through Yogafit for Warriors; yoga for TBI & PTSD. Yoga started as a workout for Caitlin, however she quickly discovered the power that mindful movement, purposeful breathing & somatic release had on her overstressed body & mind. Somatic Release Yoga became a powerful tool for her own stress & trauma healing and it became paramount while working on the Frontlines as a crisis ER nurse. Sharing alternative tools for healing through breath & bodywork has become her passion. Her mission is to elevate mental health, bring yoga back to it's eastern roots and cultivate an inclusive, trauma-sensitive, healing space. She is excited to share these methods with the community and hopes to reach individuals who might not normally try yoga but suffer from stress, anxiety, trauma or PTSD and would benefit immensely. In the words of Caitlin... 'we have the power to heal within and by doing so; we can move from a place of existing to fully living a meaningful, beautiful life.'
