World Sloth Bear Day 2024

Exhibit Educational Zoo & Animals

What’s Happening?

The Little Rock Zoo is proud to be home to four remarkable sloth bears: females Khali and Hani, and males Sahaasa and Pabu. Native to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, sloth bears play a vital role in their ecosystems by controlling insect populations and aiding in seed dispersal, which helps maintain the biodiversity of their habitats.

Unfortunately, sloth bears face numerous threats in the wild, with habitat loss due to deforestation and human encroachment being the most significant. In addition, these bears are at risk of poaching and the illegal wildlife trade, which further endangers their populations.

Come visit the Zoo to meet Khali, Hani, Sahaasa, and Pabu, and learn more about the important contributions sloth bears make to their natural environments. Your visit supports the conservation of these incredible animals and helps protect their future.

Schedule of Events:

Saturday, October 12, 2024
10:00-12:00: Awareness table near sloth bear exhibit, habitat exploration station, and hands-on activities
11:00 Keeper chat

Here’s how you can contribute to Sloth Bear Conservation:

1. Raise Awareness: Use World Sloth Bear Day to raise awareness about the challenges sloth bears face. Share information about their ecological benefits, the impact of habitat loss, and the critical need for conservation efforts.
2. Support Responsible Breeding: As a member of the Association of Zoo's & Aquariums (AZA), the Little Rock Zoo is an active participant in the sloth bear Species Survival Plan (SSP), aimed at managing and conserving typically threatened or endangered animal populations. Zoos and aquariums play a leading role in preserving animal populations across the globe. By sharing research and knowledge, participating institutions work together to establish guidelines that best ensure the health of captive populations, and with success, the survival of endangered species.
3. Shop Sustainably: Use your purchasing power to support responsible businesses that protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote human rights, and help humans and wildlife thrive. Look for products that are Rainforest Alliance or Fair Trade Certified to promote businesses who aim to reduce threats to many endangered species, including sloth bears.
4. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to sloth bear conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, and community programs essential for the survival of sloth bears. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with, such as SAFE Sloth Bear and Wildlife SOS.
