What’s Happening?

Join us for Gallery Night MKE on Friday, October 18th. Our featured installed visual artists are Steven Hopkins and Jeanne Kollmeyer. We are also inviting community creatives to table during our Gallery Night celebration so expect to enjoy a menu of fantastic art.

STEVEN HOPKINS
Steven is from Milwaukee, WI and currently lives and works in the Jackson Park neighborhood. His work has been presented at thirty shows throughout his career, several of which were juried regional, national and international affairs. His first show was in 1983 at ARTFAIR USA where he earned a Blue Ribbon for prints. The judge of that show was Dean Jensen, a highly regarded Art Critic. Steven was also represented by Cissy Peltz for several years before her passing.

Steven was trained in the Intaglio and Woodcut printing techniques under Professor Moise Smith, a Fulbright recipient for printmaking. Smith trained under Giorgio Morandi at the Ufizzi Gallery in Florence, Italy. “The Woodcut style I use incorporates elements of etching and engraving. I use a variety of tools including gouges, knives and some which I make by hand. All of my prints are hand struck, no printing press is used. My body of work spans 51 years from 1973 to present and numbers 285 individual wood blocks.” “Over the years I have become fascinated with the human face and its profound ability to express social conditions and our common humanity. Each face that I interpret offers unique challenges and inspiration. I believe there is something about a face that transcends the physical features. That ‘something’ is what I explore using the woodcut print medium.” Steven’s work is in private collections

JEANNE KOLLMEYER
Jeanne Kollmeyer is a Milwaukee based visual artist and educator specializing in acrylic painting as her medium. She has worked in the Milwaukee area for many years as a youtheducator and has developed a love of painting small works using bright colors and simple compositions. Favorite subjects include fruit and vegetable still lives, flowers in pots and seaside themed paintings. She has recently begun to teach acrylic classes to adults at several arts centers. Her work has been on display at the MARN marketplace and can also be found at Ebb and Flow Design Company in Riverwest.
