What’s Happening?

A Pinch of Flower presented by Taylor J. Acosta, Ph.D., Associate Curator of European Art

Maria van Oosterwyck (Dutch, 1630-1693), Still Life of Flowers in a Glass Vase, about 1685, oil on canvas, Museum purchase with funds from the Ethel S. Abbott Art Endowment Fund and the General Art Endowment Fund, 2019.4

Maria van Oosterwyck, one of the few female painters active in Holland in the seventeenth century, was a master of the floral still life. She enjoyed great success in her lifetime and counted King Louis XIV of France and King William III of England among her patrons. Her elegant floral arrangements set against dark backgrounds were especially admired for their diversity of flora, and it is likely she kept a portfolio of flower studies that she employed in various combinations in her paintings. This bouquet consists of roses, tulips, hollyhock, columbine, and larkspur in a modest glass vase. Butterflies, a bumblebee, and other insects settle on the blossoms and assorted shells are displayed on a marble ledge inscribed with the artist’s name. Flower paintings were very popular in the Netherlands at a time when owning rare, imported species of tulips became a status symbol. With flowers in different states of bloom and decay, the paintings also served as reminders of the transitory nature of life.
