What’s Happening?

Join us at the Little Rock Zoo to celebrate National Carousel Day on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Step back in time and celebrate the 100th birthday of our historic Over the Jumps carousel on National Carousel Day. To honor this important piece of history, we're offering free rides all day and a range of family-friendly activities from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the echo domo.

From 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, complimentary rides will be available on the Over the Jumps Carousel. Additionally, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, there will be activities such as coloring sheets, a craft station to create your own carousel button, and Carousel Ambassadors sharing the rich history of the carousel. From 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM, there will be a meet-and-greet session with Animal Ambassadors. Lastly, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, complimentary snacks, including Hiland Dairy Jungle Punch and cookies, will be provided.

Carousel Facts:

- The earliest known depiction of the merry-go-round is in 500 A.D., from the Byzantine Empire, depicting baskets carrying riders suspended from a central pole.

- In the 1840s, Franz Wiesenoffer created the first merry-go-round in the United States in Hessville, Ohio.

- July 25, 1871 – The first carousel patent.

National Merry-Go-Round Day History:

In 2014, Bette Largent, President of the National Carousel Association, and carousel historian Ronald Hopkins, founded National Merry-Go-Round Day. This special day was created to bring attention to these beautiful, historical creations. The date, July 25, commemorates the first U.S. patent issued in 1871 to William Schneider of Davenport, Iowa, a significant milestone in the evolution of carousels.
