Burlesque with a Dash of Magick

Arts & Culture Classes Meditation Performance Art

What’s Happening?

This course will explore dance moves, music, costume pieces, attitudes, energy, perception and much more to develop new acts, add depth and polish to current acts or to explore being a performer. Those who are ready and willing will have an opportunity to participate in a variety show in September.

Who this class is for:
Burlesque performers and/or enthusiasts with a penchant for the esoteric arts, of all levels of dance & performance, of all body types, ages and genders, both spiritual and secular alike.

Schedule Week by Week:
1. Intro to sacred circle, basic burlesque dance move drills, guided meditation
2. Sacred circle, glove peels, dance drills (arms, shoulder shimmies), guided meditation
3. Sacred circle, prop discussion and play, dance drills (stage strut, standing poses, timing) guided meditation
4. Sacred circle, dress & bra removal strategies, dance drills (bump and grind, shimmies) guided meditation
5. Sacred circle, shoe talk and removal, dance drills (floorwork, bends, bumps and grinds) guided meditation
6. Sacred circle, corsets; choosing one, removal. Dance drills (chest and hip circles, bumps and grinds, shimmies) guided meditation

Over all objective:
To use ritual to invoke the performer within!
We will create a sacred space to explore our own creativity in an inclusive and safe environment. Creativity requires vulnerability. Ritual enhances neuroplasticity. Every class will begin with closing our sacred circle by stating our intention for the hour aloud or spoken to oneself, every class will end by opening our sacred circle before we go back into the world with new found self knowledge. Guided meditation will be short and succinct as there is much dancing and costume exploration to be had! In theory the sacred circle and meditation will help performers create their own habits of practicing and perfecting their art. You do not have to subscribe to a deity to participate.

Inclusive Learning:
This environment is exploratory, keep competition and criticisms away! How do I keep this exploratory and safe?
a. What is explored in the circle stays in the circle, do not share others progress
b. This class is welcome to all genders, ethnicities, ages, ability and spiritual practices
c. Repetition in dance drills creates confidence
d. Inclusion of burlesque history will shape perception of self and one’s involvement in the art form
e. Differently abled students will receive alternative dance drills if necessary
f. Zero tolerance for bullying or disrespect to myself or other students

Materials & Resources
I will provide my sources per class

Assessment
It is my goal to cultivate confident burlesque performers and burlesque enthusiasts through ritual, mind/body awareness, and exploring our creativity as performance artists.

$15.00 per week or $96 for all 8.
