Another Sunrise: A Holocaust Remembrance

Concert Opera Judiasm

What’s Happening?

The Atlanta Opera and The Temple present "Identity & Conflict," an evening of music and reflection featuring Another Sunrise -- a work for soprano and chamber ensemble -- commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day. The music will be followed by a panel discussion about the choices people make during a crisis.

Another Sunrise, by Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer, is based on the true day-to-day fight for survival of the spirited, quick-witted Krystyna Zywulska during the Nazi occupation of Poland. She walked out of the Warsaw ghetto in broad daylight in 1942 and joined the Polish resistance before being captured and sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Still concealing her Jewish roots, Zywulska wrote satiric poems and songs that became camp anthems of resistance. The work is set in the 1960s as she is still struggling with her ongoing public denial of her Jewish identity.

Presented in tandem with The Atlanta Opera's mainstage performance of Die Walkure by Richard Wagner (a controversial anti-Semite), the evening is an opportunity to discuss the dangers of bigotry, especially in the hands of influential artists.

The panel discussion is moderated by Lois Reitzis and features Rabbi Peter S. Berg (The Temple), Gene Scheer (Another Sunrise librettist), and Tomer Zvulun (The Atlanta Opera).
