What’s Happening?

Millwork Conversations will provide an opportunity to learn from people across communities right here in Nebraska and across the country about new ideas and what’s possible – how to push past real and imagined boundaries. Each month will provide an inspiring, memorable experience for attendees through compelling conversations.

In March we will discuss the importance of Civic Engagement with a talk moderated by Jo Giles of Women's fund. Joining her are Panelists:

and, Dr. Lina Translaviña-Stover of Heartland Worker's Center

Civic Nebraska will operate a Voter Registration table, paralell to Habitat For Humanity providing guests with valuable information on petitions and civic concerns.

Brad Christian-Sallis | Nebraska Table

Brad Christian-Sallis is an experienced organizing and campaign strategist who believes in the power of people to shape a more beautiful, just, and equitable world. Prior to joining the Nebraska Civic Engagement Table as Director of Power Building he held various positions, including Movement Building Manager at Ballot Initiative Strategy Center and Voting Rights Field Director at Civic Nebraska. Additionally, he has contributed to numerous campaigns across Nebraska and Iowa, advocating for voting rights, racial justice, and other progressive issues.

Brad holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and is a New Leaders Council alumnus. He has received the 2019 Omaha NAACP Freedom Fighter award and the 2020 Omaha Jaycees Ten Outstanding Young Omahans Distinguished Service award for his impactful work.

 


Kimara Snipes | One Omaha

Kimara Snipes, a native of Omaha, is the Executive Director of One Omaha. Ms. Snipes has organized in East Omaha communities since she was a teenager and has continued that work through her involvement with East Omaha neighborhood associations. Ms. Snipes served as the President of the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance for four years. Under her leadership, SONA successfully navigated COVID while connecting information from our elected officials, the Douglas County Board of Health and the Omaha Public School District to thousands of people in the Omaha community. Ms Snipes holds a nonprofit administration certification from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a Diversity and Inclusion certification from Cornell. In January, she was the proud recipient of the Martin Luther King Drum Major for Justice in Accountability award. Ms. Snipes is the President of P4 Innovative Solutions, LLC where her focus is on stakeholder engagement and insight gathering, DEI policy and program design and more. She enjoys motorcycles, reading and hanging out at basketball games with her 23 year old son, Kemari.

 


Dr. Lina Translaviña-Stover | Heartland Worker’s Center

Dr. Lina Traslaviña Stover is a Sociologist with deep commitment to addressing inequality and social justice. Lina was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, and moved to Nebraska to attend college at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Throughout Lina’s career, she has studied and explored the complex circumstances that make the movement of people across borders possible. Lina believes that listening to people’s history is how empathy grows: “it is from these histories that we can identify patterns of inequality and explore solutions. Understanding precedes action.” Lina currently serves as the Executive Director for Heartland Workers Center, a nonprofit organization devoted to building leadership and civic engagement among immigrant and other underserved populations across Nebraska.

Lina oversees programs including a “Get Out The Vote” campaign, Health and Safety Training Institute, and Leadership Development Program. Lina received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration & International Studies in 2004 from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and later, a master’s in Urban Studies from University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology with a concentration in inequality from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

Among her awards: TOYO Ten Outstanding Young Omahans, Omaha Jaycees in 2015; United States Hispanic Leadership Conference Voices of Empowerment featured speaker in 2013, RIchard H. Larson Fellowship, UNL 2008-09; Dr. Elizabeth; Alfred Outstanding Service Award, Omaha Public Schools, 2008; Outstanding Senior Award, UNK Alumni Associate, 2004
