Online book Buying for the Kiddos Webinar

What’s Happening?

The pendulum swings, and currently, sales of what we call the “Gutenberg” book are strong. As libraries reopen, they report a pent-up demand for books for readers of all ages. Studies are showing that young scholars prefer physical books to reading online, and evidence shows that families that have home book collections are better are nurturing school success. Online book review sites provide instant reader feedback. It’s a new Golden Age for children’s literature. But the choices can be overwhelming.

If you want to give books at the holiday season to younger friends and family members, how can you use online resources to find the best fiction and nonfiction? Where can you learn about titles that will engage, entertain, educate, enlighten, and otherwise score genuine thank-yous? Do you need to be concerned about “age-appropriate” ratings? What do you need to know about controversial topics? What about the classics, books you loved as a child that might not even be in print? And are awards a guide for what to buy?

Pat Wagner has worked a library consultant for over forty years and thinks that most books for young people are better than those written for adults. She still has her copy of Brighty of the Grand Canyon that she stole from her big sister when she was a precocious five-year-old.
