What’s Happening?

Mellissa Huber, The Costume Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in conversation with Carter Foster, Chief Curator, Blanton Museum

In recent decades, the display of fashion and costume has become increasingly common in the spaces of art museums. Style icons and fashion designers have been the subjects of massively popular shows. Such presentations have inspired audiences to recognize fashion as a form of creative expression on the same level as more traditional artistic mediums. Leading the charge in scholarship and exhibition design has been the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which has helped define the art of fashion through groundbreaking thematic and monographic shows. This conversation will explore how the perception of fashion and art has evolved in recent cultural history and the ways in which art museums have contributed to shaping that perception.
