A Look Behind the Burin: Women Printmakers at the Blanton and Beyond with Kelsey Martin

In its exploration of the family enterprises of European printmaking, the Blanton’s Paper Vault exhibition A Family Affair: Artistic Dynasties in Europe (Part II, 1670-1900) offers a unique glimpse into a long-overlooked reality of the history of printed art: women were, and always have been, involved.

This lecture dives deep into the work and lives of the women artists featured in the exhibition, and provides additional examples of professional women printmakers associated with these prominent artistic dynasties. From Madeleine Horthemels, to Marguerite Gérard, to Berthe Morisot, and beyond—women used printmaking to claim public identities as artists in ways that often went beyond the confines of their familial artistic circles and workshops. Organized by Holly Borham, Curator of Prints, Drawings and European Art.
