FIlm Other Professional Development Workshop

What’s Happening?

Led by Bumdog Torres, this filmmaking workshop will guide participants through the essentials of DIY filmmaking using just a smartphone—no crew, no budget, just pure creative grit. The purpose of these classes will not be just to teach film grammar. But to learn the great value of the experience of making a movie. The personal growth and adventure of pure creation. And the importance of knowing afterward that you made your mark on the world…even if it’s just a stain.

Every session will be free and open to the public, and interested parties are welcome to join for just a single session or attend the entire series. Participants are recommended to be ages 14 and up and must have a smartphone with video editing capability.

#1: Editing and transitions. Cinematic composition. Juxtaposition of Sound. “Recreate Your Day”. | September 20th, 9am—5pm

#2: “Stories for Movies” | September 27th, 1pm—5pm

#3: “Storytelling for Movies” | October 11th, 1pm—5pm

#4: “Mastery” | October 25th, 1pm—5pm

#5: “Gestalt” and “Make your own damn movie” | November 8th, 9am—5pm

If you would like to commit to attending all full five sessions ,which will include the creation of a10 minute short film, a 30 minute short film, a 60 minute short film, and a final feature length feature film, email Michael Balot-Garza at education@wendemuseum.org and share the reasons why you're interested in becoming a filmmaker. Space is limited.

About Bumdog: Bumdog Torres is a self proclaimed “career homeless bum”. Having spent most of his life homeless (or “homefree” as he prefers to identify), with almost no resources, he has nonetheless been able to create an unusually large body of artistic work. These include, a self published book of short stories, a performed one man play, two feature length films, 9 books of street photography and a stint as a photo essayist during the COVID Pandemic. This creative oeuvre has made him something of a known unique name in underground Los Angeles art circles. A fact that was cemented when in 2024 he was awarded the prestigious J Paul Getty/CCF Artist Fellowship Grant.
