In this zine volume of “(UN)Necessary Duplicates,” each person will be assigned a letter of the phrase and will create an 8.5 x11” color image via digital, physical, or through a combination of processes. There are 20 spots open in the workshop, and artists will bring their own materials, but also encouraged to share materials. On the day of the workshop, we will talk about our ideas and make our pages for the zine volume. If artists want to start their image before the workshop or finish their image afterward, this is also encouraged. The workshop promotes collaboration, brainstorming, and experimentation. Upon completion of all 20 images, the zine will be printed so that each participant will receive a copy of everyone's work. THEME: The idea of something or someone being deemed "unnecessary" implies judgment, but on what grounds? Refuge, persecution, survival, and hierarchies can all play into this, when a person is on the wrong side of the judgment that is taking place. This portfolio is a space to explore these themes, opening the doors for empathy, understanding, and diversity, to show that multiple variations of (what some might consider) duplication, are necessary to our survival as artists and as a nation. This project's repeated investigations can hopefully create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subtle differences that coexist.
TOTAL # OF PARTICIPANTS: 20 (email curLyMeg88@gmail.com to sign up)
WORKSHOP FEE: COST OF PRINTING YOUR ZINE, BRING YOUR OWN MATERIALS
