What’s Happening?

For our Hindsight Is 20/20 series, we’re revisiting some of our favorite films that were underappreciated in their time. See what else we’ve got in store for you here.

Fantasy films were big in the ’80s, with their magical creatures, strange worlds, and epic quests. Yet despite the popularity of the genre, the reputation of director Ridley Scott, and the star power of Tom Cruise, LEGEND failed to connect with audiences or critics when it came out in 1986 (Tony Scott’s TOP GUN came out the same year and made about 23 times more money at the worldwide box office).

But over time, the film has found an audience. From Scott’s exquisite visuals to the impressive makeup effects from Rob Bottin (of ROBOCOP and THE THING fame), the film transports viewers to another world. And no other fantasy film of the time features Tim Curry chewing up every single scene as a character named Darkness (who’s basically just the devil).

Find out what everyone in 1986 was missing, and join us for a thrilling adventure as Tom Cruise tries to protect endangered unicorns from the forces of Darkness in Ridley Scott’s LEGEND.
